National Chaplaincy for Deaf People

This DVD was launched by the National Chaplaincy for Deaf People in October 2005 to enable interpreters to understand liturgies for Deaf people. It is also an aid to educators and parents to teach Deaf children and those interested in learning the liturgical signs and prayers of the Church.


The Archbishop of Dublin, Diarmuid Martin, in his introduction to the DVD, outlines some of the benefits.

"I am delighted to give my support to the production of this DVD on Liturgical Signs & Prayers". It will be a great benefit to many people.

Sign-Language greatly enhances the quality of our Liturgies. It is so important that deaf people have access to the rites and celebrations of the Church in their own language.

The role of the Interpreter is so vital to the involvement of Deaf people in the life of the Church. In this sense, the Interpreter becomes a "Minister" in the same way as a Minister of the Word or Minister of the Eucharist and so on. I know that many Sign-Language Interpreters find it difficult to interpret in Religious settings as often the words and language we use are not words that people are using on a daily basis. I am very pleased that this DVD is now available to help Interpreters learn the signs that many Deaf people are familiar with through their education and their attendance at Deaf liturgical celebrations.

Teachers of Sign-Language will also find this DVD very useful as they help deaf people to understand the religious words used in Liturgical settings and the sign for each of the words.

Parents of Deaf children will be able to use the DVD to teach their children the common prayers of the Church and the responses to the Holy Eucharist in a language that is more suitable for their child.

This DVD will make us more aware of the needs of our Deaf brothers and sisters and will enable each of us to work towards a greater inclusion of Deaf people in the life of the Church. I congratulate all who were involved in the production and wish you every blessing and success in the future."
